The Planning and Engineering Departments serve to facilitate a number of functions across the City. Here is a list of some of these functions:
- Administer the City Zoning Ordinance.
- Administer the City Subdivision regulations.
- Administer Federal Flood Plain and Insurance Program regulations.
- Perform studies and reports about the City’s urban characteristics and trends.
- Support the following City Boards and Commissions:
- Planning Commission
- Board of Zoning Adjustments
- Report Planning Commission activities to City Council.
- Assist in public relations efforts through contacts with the local media, civic organizations, and citizen groups.
- Supervise Street Department activities.
- Perform Plan Review and Construction Inspection of all new building sites and subdivision developments.
- Perform Plan Review and contract administration of all Capital Projects designed by consultants.
- Perform Design and Construction Inspection of small Capital Improvements Projects.
- Inspect all work performed by private contractors on city right-of-ways.
- Design and supervise City’s annual street paving program.
- Support other departments by providing surveying and drafting services.
- Maintain and update city records of property plat books, deed transfers, new subdivisions, streets, alleys, survey benchmarks, sewer, storm drain, gas, and water lines.
- Support the Mayor and City Administrator with technical information on all infrastructure of the City.
- Provide administrative assistance to the City’s weed, litter, junk, abandoned car and trash ordinances.
- Administer the City’s building code program.
- Issue and monitor building construction, demolition, and land disturbance permits.
- Issue sign permits.
- Coordinate local census efforts for the United States Census Bureau.
- Represent the City in various regional and state meetings and organizations.
- Coordinate on-going maintenance of the Enhanced 911 database files.
