Our new sanitation collection provider, GFL Environmental Services, has begun to change out trash receptacles. For commercial dumpster services, green dumpsters will replace the blue Republic dumpsters. The new carts for residential services will be black, with recycling carts featuring yellow lids. Container servicing will transition from Republic to GFL on April 1st.

SALARY: $18.41 – $20.63/hour, nonexempt

DESCRIPTION: Under supervision, performs semi-skilled and manual labor work activities in the construction, maintenance and cleanliness of city buildings, streets and roads; may operate equipment assigned to division; assists other divisions/departments as requested; performs related work as required. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

  1. Assists in the construction, maintenance and cleanliness of city streets, roads, bridges, sidewalks, alleys, storm sewers and culverts, manholes, drainage ditches, street signs, barricades, etc. 
  2. May operate motorized equipment safely and efficiently; may operate heavy equipment. 
  3. Detects malfunction in equipment; cleans and properly stores equipment and tools after use. 
  4. Performs preventive maintenance duties on equipment; clean/properly store equipment and tools after use. 
  5. Mows grass, cuts trees and tree limbs. 
  6. Picks up leaves as needed. 
  7. Spreads gravel; cleans streets and roads; removes snow/ice from streets and sidewalks when necessary. 
  8. Operates snow plow and salt spreader. 
  9. Cleans out storm sewers and catch basins; pours concrete; makes forms; makes, erects and/or repairs street signs as necessary. 
  10. Requisitions equipment, tools, supplies and materials. 
  11. Prepares required reports and records. 
  12. Participates in continuing education programs. 
  13. Assists other division/departments as requested. 
  14. Applied pesticides along city owned right-of-way as required. 
  15. Performs traffic flagging duties as required. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High school diploma or GED Certification – required. 
  • Driver’s License - required. 
  • Must obtain a CDL within one year. 
  • Must obtain and maintain a category 6 Kentucky Pesticide License within one year. 

MUST BE ABLE TO: 

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with officers, employees, the general public. 
  • Perform heavy labor for extended periods of time, often during adverse weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to respond to calls in emergency situations at all hours. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Work is performed outdoors regardless of weather conditions, requiring intermittent standing, walking, stooping; must lift objects over 50 lbs.; must operate vehicle and equipment; exposed to machinery and its moving parts; required to be in high places, confined spaces, and using stairs and ladders; exposed to fumes, chemicals and toxic substances as a requirement of the job. 

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be able to obtain a Basic Work Zone Traffic Control and Flagger certification.
