The Street Department consists of nine full-time employees and one part-time
employee. The part-time employee works five days a week, 52 weeks a year. He is
assigned to work nights from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. to operate the sweeper and
to sweep all streets with curbs and gutters inside the City limits. He also
paints all parking spaces downtown and paints crosswalks all over the City. When
not able to sweep or paint, he cleans drains, does sign maintenance, and does
repair and maintenance on the sweeper.
The Street Department employees also maintain the City’s 54-acre cemetery. This
operation requires two full-time employees and four Class D Felony workers
through the Calloway County Jail Class D Felony Work Program. They work in the
cemetery for eight and one half months out of the year.
The remaining seven employees are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of
93 miles of streets inside the City limits.
The City of Murray is not responsible for the maintenance of any traffic
signals. All traffic signals in the city limits are maintained by the Kentucky
Transportation Cabinet, District 1.
